"We've just been told we need SSIP to get on the approved list."
Common for small contractors moving into commercial or public sector work for the first time.
Sound familiar?
"We started the application but gave up — it's confusing."
SSIP applications ask for documents and policies many small businesses don't have ready, or have at all.
"My business has grown and they want more records and documents than last year."
SSIP schemes ask for documents many small businesses struggle to stay on top of when they grow rapidly.
"Our accreditation lapsed and we've got a contract starting next month."
Renewals slip when you're busy on site. A lapsed accreditation can cost a job, delay a start, or stop a payment.
"We don't know which scheme is right for us — CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor?"
There are over 20 SSIP member schemes. Choosing the wrong one wastes time and money.
Whatever the issue, I have the solution.

Short bio and testimonials
Samuel Nesbitt BSc (Hons), Grad. Dip., CMIOSH AIFireE
I have an Honours Degree in Health & Safety, a Graduate Diploma in Work and Organisational Behaviour, I am a Chartered member of IOSH and an Associate of the Institute of Fire Engineers. I have over 13 years of experience working with businesses in construction and related trades as a H&S professional and almost 40 years working experience including in the military and Prison Service, and in the pharmaceutical, oil and gas, food manufacturing, construction and consultancy sectors.
I specialise in SSIP accreditation for small contractors and construction related businesses, the kind of businesses where the owner is also the site manager, the book keeper, and the tradesperson doing the actual work.
I work entirely remotely, which means I can support businesses anywhere in the UK and Ireland without the cost and disruption of site visits. My clients get the same quality of H&S consultancy that larger businesses pay far more for, at a fixed price that's transparent from the start.
Most importantly, I have worked as a SSIP auditor and personally audited over 2000 contractors in my time with one of the most popular schemes, so I know the audit and accreditation process intimately. If you need SSIP accreditation I can get it for you, with your assistance.
Don’t just take my word for it though, here’s what some of my clients have to say:
Health & Safety Consultant · SSIP specialist
“When we first started working with Sam Nesbitt, we weren’t sure where to begin with Health & Safety compliance. Five years later, we can honestly say it’s one of the best business decisions we’ve made. ”
“Sam provides a first-class health and safety and SSIP support service, offering clear, practical advice and exceptional support at all times.”
“Sam has been a wonderful help to myself and our company to get us through our SSIP Audit each year, I couldn’t recommend him enough he’s been my saving Grace! Thanks Sam for your help! ”
“Thank you so much for all your help with our Constructionline.”
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Think of it like getting your car MOTd. You ‘take’ your business to a test centre (one of the SSIP schemes), and they carry out an MOT on it (they audit your paperwork) and if you pass, you get a certificate that is good for a year.
Having an active SSIP accreditation (your certificate), is often a requirement for getting onto approved supplier lists for most local authorities, housing associations, and large main contractors.
-
It depends on who your clients are and what trade you're in. The most widely recognised schemes for small contractors are CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, and SMAS Worksafe, but the right one depends on your specific situation. This is one of the first things we'll discuss on the free call, and I'll advise you before you commit to any application fee.

I am a highly qualified H&S professional with many years experience in construction related work. I have also audited over 2000 small businesses during my time as an SSIP auditor and have helped many more achieve and maintain accreditation with a variety of schemes since then.

We start with a short phone or video call. You then send me your existing documents by email. I review them, identify what's missing, create policies and templates that needs creating, you send me evidence of your H&S management in practice like toolbox talk sign offs, plant inspection records, etc, then I complete the application and submit it on your behalf. There's no need for a site visit from me for SSIP work.

Typically 2 - 6 weeks from start to certificate, depending on the scheme and how much documentation you already have in place. Renewals are usually quicker. The main variable is how quickly you can supply the documents that need to come from you (insurance certificates, operational records, training records, etc.).
-
Yes. A lapsed accreditation is usually treated as a renewal and the process is usually quicker than a first-time application because most of your documentation is already in place. Get in touch and we'll discuss how quickly we can turn it around.
